National Day of Mourning To Be Held

The Moose Jaw and District Labour Council will be hosting a ceremony this Sunday afternoon at 2 pm to honour and remember those killed or injured on the job. The ceremony will take place, weather permitting, outdoors at the Day of Mourning Cairn located at Union Centre 1402 Caribou Street West.

If the weather is inclement then the ceremony will be held inside the Union Centre. The event is open to everyone and refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

The National Day of Mourning is a nationwide event where the many people killed or hurt as well as other friends and families who suffered due to an on the job fatality, injury or job related illness are remembered and honoured.

The April 28th date was chosen because it was the same day in 1914 that the first Workers Compensation Act was past in Canada in Ontario and from there similar Acts were adopted elsewhere across Canada.

The purpose of Day of Mourning is twofold- to remember and honour those lives lost or injured and to renew the commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace - to prevent further deaths, injuries and diseases from work.
