Mayor Says Warriors In Five - Takes Shot At Swift Current’s Mayor

With the Moose Jaw Warriors headed into the second round of the WHL playoffs versus the Swift Current Broncos Mayor Clive Tolley was asked by MJ Independent in the post Council media scrum about this round of the playoffs.

“This is the best Moose Jaw Warrior team in the 40 year history. We’ve had two or three other opportunities and just fell short. I am predicting that we’re going to go on and win the Western Hockey League Championship,” Mayor Tolley responded. “And compete in the Memorial Cup.”

About this round the Mayor said last time the two teams met in the playoffs the Broncos defeated the Warriors in seven.

“I’m going to say we are going to beat them in five (games),” he said.

MJ Independent asked if being the Mayor was he not conflicted by predicting a Warrior’s win in five when having game seven would financially benefit the facility, the Warriors, local businesses as well as the City he deflected the question.

Mayor Tolley says longer series are tough on teams.

“Every home game is some money going towards our building and towards our hockey club. I think if you were to ask the board of the Warriors or the coaching staff, their administration or players here they would like to win in four games if they could.”

The Warriors are a quarter of the way to WHL championship.

“You need to win 16 games to win the championship so we’ve got four wins so far,” he said.

Regarding the traditional wager between the two city mayors - where they bet that the losing mayor wears the other team’s jersey at a Council meeting - Mayor Tolley said he was going to get at it.

“You know we haven’t talked about that with Al Bridal (Swift Current’s mayor) and so we should actually be giving him a call. We’ll see about that.”

Mayor Tolley said in all likelihood Swift Current’s mayor has said nothing about the bet because he knows he is going to lose.

“I suspect Al hasn’t contacted me because he knows he would be wearing a Warrior’s jersey at a meeting,” the Mayor said to the laughter of the Moose Jaw press.

The other Moose Jaw media declined to ask the Mayor any questions because MJ Independent had done enough.

Game One is Friday April 12th at the Moose Jaw Events Centre
