Defensive Change Not Enough For Come From Behind Win

The cold weather outside right now affects how your vehicle runs.

Although the weather wasn’t cold in Peacock Collegiate’s gym the Toilers senior boys team’s engine sputtered at key times as they fell 68 - 63 to the Weyburn Eagles on Friday afternoon.

Playing in the school’s inaugural senior boys and senior girls basketball tournament the Toilers just didn’t have enough octane to pass the Eagles.

“It was a close game. We didn’t play with much intensity so we didn’t deserve to win that game the way we played for sure,” Peacock Toilers head coach Troy Setter said.

Setter said it had been a bit of an off week for the Toilers.

“The intensity wasn’t there…a lot of sickness. The intensity wasn’t there all week in practices and it showed in the game today,” Setter said.

The poor weather saw the Toilers miss their Tuesday night game versus Lumsden but the team instead used the Tuesday time to practice.

“The way Weyburn came out they wanted it way more than we did.”

He said the solution was not something the coaches could make happen but it was “a matter of the guys coming out and wanting to put in the hard work.”

One of the things about the game was they had called the time out and decided to try out a new defense. The team had yet to deploy..

It was something Setter was happy about.

“They executed it well and we made a game out of it in the end.”

“There was some good in what happened in the game. It’s just unfortunate without the intensity we’ve had,” Setter said.

He wasn’t upset with the fouls taken by the team saying that fouls were fouls and that’s what happens when you get a little bit lazy with your feet.

Despite the team losing its first game of the tournament, he said it was great to have the tournament.

“It’s good to see another team. It’s great to get another home game in. We came in with some good stuff. We got in a new defence. Jack played his ass off.”

A nose bleed and a broken nose made the Setter’s list of players who played their hardest .

“There was some good effort. But as a team we just didn’t have the effort,” he said.

Overall Setter likes the new tournament as it allows the team to see new opponents and improve.

The four team two day round robin tournament continues tomorrow at Peacock Collegiate gym.

The senior boys play at 10 am and 2 pm.

The senior girls play at 11:45 am and 3:45 pm.

Admission for the entire day is $5.
