How Grinch Trump Increased the Price of Coffee in Moose Jaw (Copy)
By Richard Dowson Opinion/Commentary
Before Trump put tariffs on Brazilian coffee, I could buy my favourite can of coffee, on sale, in a Moose Jaw grocery store for $10.00.
After Trump put the Tariff on Brazilian Coffee beans, and other products from Brazil, the price of the same can of coffee, on sale, increased to $18.00.
I asked myself, “Self, how come a Trump Tariff on Brazilian coffee beans increases the price of a can of coffee in Moose Jaw?”
Turns out the beans for my favorite coffee are grown in Brazil, imported into the United States, processed there and shipped to Canada and on to Moose Jaw.
So, I thought, “Since Canada doesn’t have a tariff on Brazilian coffee, Canadian coffee will be cheaper than a can of my favorite brand?”
Not so!
Canadian brands I looked at are ‘specialty brands.’ As such, they are more expensive than the imported, Trump Tariff laden American brand.
By the way:The Trump Tariff was 50%, which doesn’t explain the 80% increase in the price of my favorite can of coffee in Moose Jaw.
Trump is removing the Brazilian coffee Tariff. Will the price of my favorite coffee go down?
I’ll have to wait and see.
