Toilers Dominate Against Angels

Monday evening witnessed the return of high school basketball after the Christmas break.

For the Peacock Toilers junior girls team it was a big return as they defeated the visiting Lumsden Angels 59 - 5.

“With games like this, they kind of work on going through the motions. Working on our plays and going through good defence. I think the girls showed up tonight and played a lot of good defence and we worked on a lot of things offensively as well,” Leanne Bruce head coach of the Toilers said.

Developmentally the 13 grade nine students who make up the Toilers, are on target.

“Our girls have done really well. We usually have a really good head to head with Central (Collegiate) and I think that will continue throughout the season. We’re having a lot of fun with it,” she said.

Bruce is in her first year as a head coach of a Toilers team - after serving as an assistant coach

“It’s a lot of fun being able to get back to the school I played at. I’ve been really enjoying it.”

Bruce said the team has been working hard to make the the jump from elementary school basketball to the systems based high school game.

“We’ve been working on our development more so like position based plays than what they did in elementary. And defensive plays as well,” she said.

“At the beginning of the season it was a blank slate. We started fresh and taught them the way Peacock plays basketball so they can continue as a senior when they get up to their higher years.”

The city aching is aiming for aggressive play but as well as sportsmanship at the end of the day.

Parent support of the team and the program has been strong.
