Youth Trio Headed To Court After E Motorcycle Chase

Not stopping for police and trying to ride off into the sunset cost a trio of young people their e-motorbikes for seven days, fines and a trip to court.

According to the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) the police recently attempted to stop three youth on electric (E) motorcycles who subsequently fled the scene.

The police did not state the distance or length of the chase.

“In that incident, officers attempted to stop the riders, but the youth fled from police. As a result, the vehicles were seized and impounded for seven days. The youth were issued Summary Offence Tickets under The Traffic Safety Act, including driving without due care and attention, operating an unregistered vehicle, and failing to stop for police which result in both fines and court appearances,” the MJPS said in a statement.

E motorcycles cannot legally be operated on roadways as they are considered unregistered motor vehicles, the police said.

The incident is not part of a greater crackdown of e-scooters the MJPS said. Parents have raised concerns with MJ Independent the MJPS is seemingly cracking down on e scooter users. E scooters are legal in Moose Jaw as long as they are operated according to the bylaw.

The MJPS states this is not the case. The enforcement is under the provincial legislation and was e motorcycles.

“Moose Jaw's e-scooter bylaw permits the use of electric kick scooters subject to various regulations. The enforcement action in this incident was under the Traffic Safety Act as the vehicles fell outside of the description of an e-scooter,” the MJPS wrote.

No ages of the youth involved in the incident were released.
