Vikings Open Tournament With A Victory

The Vanier Vikings senior boys volleyball team were a well oiled machine as they defeated Mossbank Spirit Lightning in two straight sets.

Set scores were 25 - 7 and 25 - 10 in Vanier’s favour.

The Vikings were playing their first game in the Moose Jaw High School Athletic Association (MJHSAA) Senior Boys Volleyball Tournament.

The tournament runs today (October 23rd) and tomorrow (October 24th).

The tournament features five local and area teams - Cornerstone Christian School, Central Collegiate, Peacock Collegiate, Vanier Collegiate and Briercrest Christian Academy.

Admission is $3 on Friday and $5 for Saturday.

Friday’s games are being played at Central Collegiate, Peacock Collegiate, Cornerstone Christian School and Vanier Collegiate.

The last game at all four venues is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

On Saturday games will be hosted at Peacock Collegiate (two courts), Central Collegiate and Vanier Collegiate.

Levi Broda, head coach of the Vanier Vikings, said the game versus Mossbank was a good one for the team.

“I’m just happy with how the boys came out. They came out with a little bit more energy and execution that we had earlier in the week. So it’s really good to see everybody perform at a high level,” Broda said.

The reason for tournaments is two fold - accustom the team to different teams and as a reward he said.

“Tournaments the way we look at it is they are a reward for all of the hard work they put in during the week at practices and league games. Obviously they’re an opportunity to travel and see the province.”

Tournaments are a tuneup against opponents the team may not see until later in the provincial playoffs .

“What is fun is watching the guys play different teams they never played before so they have to do some problem solving on their own in these tournaments,” Broda said.

“It gets them thinking a little bit differently too.”
