Vikings Squeak By Toilers
The Vanier Vikings junior boys basketball team may have defeated the Peacock Toilers Green team 61 - 56 on Monday evening but it was at times a sluggish victory.
Often reminiscent of a loose timing chain.
For the Toilers the loss wasn’t the desired result but it was a game where the visitors held the gas pedal to the floor.
“I think it was an incredible improvement when we started this year,” Chris Roney head coach of the Peacock Toilers told MJ Independent.
“Again this is the first game we played them and it was a very different outcome. I’m very happy with the progress we’ve made and the boys have worked hard,” Roney said.
Asked about the Toilers losing the game in the last few minutes he agreed stating “yeah we’re a young team and the majority of players are (grade) nines. So there is always opportunities for mistakes and things like that but again we need to learn for next time.”
A top player for the Toilers was #3 Rylan asked about him Coach Roney spoke highly of him.
“I think he played awesome. He played very aggressive. He is a great one to have. He’s a great weapon like all of our guys are.
Rylan scored only four points but helped set up numerous scoring opportunities for the Toilers by dribbling past opponents. He is also one of the smallest members of the Peacock team.
Shooting percentage for the Toilers was very high.
“I’m very happy. I’m very happy with how this went. We would like a better outcome but that’s how it goes sometimes.”
The Toilers and the Vikings held the lead in a game that saw the score seesawing.
The Toilers had a good start that seemed to catch the Vikings flatfooted at times.
“I can only say happy things right now. I’m very happy with the progress they’ve made.”
