Tournament A Good Tune Up For The Toilers

Last second dramatics saw the Peacock Toilers grab victory from the jaws of defeat in a nail biter versus the Humboldt Mohawks.

Trailing 61 - 58 and the last seconds ticking away the Toilers set up a three pointer that brought the gym down when it hit hoop with no time left on the clock.

In overtime the Toilers would carbon copy their late game dramatics as they would hit a field goal to defeat the Humboldt Mohawks 68 - 66.

But the tournament was more than a 2 - 2 record for the Toilers it was a learning experience.

“It was a fun game. It was sloppy but it was a fun game,” Peacock Toilers head coach Troy Setter said.

The Toilers wrapped up the victory with a high shooting percentage at three pointers. Six points on two shots by Caleb A.

“Nate knocked a couple of big free throws for us. He is always there working hard inside it’s nice to see him get rewarded,” he said.

The Toilers coaching team showed confidence in the team when trailing 46 - 42 in the third quarter they played the bench.

“Everybody contributes on our team. That’s how it’s been since day one and that’s how we want it to be,” Setter said.

“Like I said you’re only getting better if you’re playing minutes that matter…mistakes happen. We’re going to trust our guys. We’re going to grow and learn with them together.”

Despite being the bench Sutter said the bench played well.

“They did well. It was a sloppy game for both sides but the boys worked hard and were happy they got rewarded in the end.”

The Toilers saw good and bad for improvement on the weekend. One of the last tuneups for city league championships and a provincial championship - Hoopla - run.

“We had some growth. We had some setbacks but overall we’re happy with the performance the guys put in there. We had some good effort. We brought Ryder up from the junior team and got him in for a few shifts here and there.”

“We had some good games and we got in some good minutes. We got some nice minutes out of Sam in the previous game where he was just working his butt off on D. Caleb obviously had some big shots. Nathan had a great weekend. We had a lot of good h things happen,” Setter said.

“There’s a lot of guys who did a lot of good things.”

Asked about his feelings overall about the tournament it’s one of tempered happiness.

“I’m about as half of happy had we gone 4 - 0. So I’m happy with it the guys played hard.

The team now has a tournament in North Battleford and the playoffs for the city championships plus hopefully a successful Hoopla run.
