U15 A Mavericks Heading To Provincial Final

A four goal first period surge propelled the Moose Jaw Carpet One U15 A Mavericks to a 5 - 3 victory over the Regina Rebels Red on Saturday evening.

The win combined with an earlier 4 - 3 victory over the Rebels Red sees the Mavericks capture the best of three games series 2 - 0 and the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SFHL) south division title.

The Mavericks will now face the SFHL’s north division winner the Western Prairie Thunderbolts in a best of three series for the U15 A provincial title. A rematch from last season.

The Mavericks came out strong early in the first period scoring four goals before the Rebels Red could respond with their own tally.

London Weisgerber scored for the Mavericks at 19:18 assisted by Taya Babich.

The Mavericks would go up 2 - 0 at 15:56 when Madeline Hopkinson scored with Willow Scott assisting.

Less than a minute later at 15:22 the Mavericks would go up 3 - 0 when Kacey Gadd scored assisted by Babich and Alyssa Wood.

An unassisted powerplay goal by Hopkinson at 11:06 turned out to be the winning goal. The Rebels Red had been called for goaltender interference.

The Rebels Red would get on the scoreboard at 8:14 when Emerson McEwen scored assisted by Monroe Junior and Harper Fuchs.

The second period saw only one goal scored.

Scott would score a goal late in the period - 1:48 - assisted by Hopkinson and Allora Smith.

Despite a 5 - 1 deficit heading into the third period Regina didn’t give up going on to score two goals in the period.

Brooke Vancise would score an unassisted goal at 6:47.

Regina would round out the scoring at 2:45 when Junior would score an unassisted goal.

The Mavericks next face the Western Prairie Thunderbolts in a best of three games series for the SFHL’s provincial title.
