Central Cyclones Senior Boys Gold Medal Bound

The Central Cyclones senior boys basketball team is on the verge of making history - the first 4A senior boys team to win six consecutive HOOPLA championships in a row.

On Fridy afternoon the Cyclones took one step towards repeating their championship run as they defeated the Humboldt Mohawks 81 - 45.

The game started off slow for the Cyclones as the Mohawks stayed right with them through most of the first quarter.

But once the quarter ended it seemed that the Cyclones threw it out of neutral and went straight to high gear.

The Cyclones used a fast break against the Mohawks s they crashed through the defence to attack the basket. It was a move the Mohawks at times had some success against but the Cyclones quickly broke through and began to sink baskets.

“It started off a little slow today but then the guys started putting it on and we began playing like how I expected us to play today,” Central Cyclones head coach Cris Temple said.

Temple said he was not worried about not wracking up a large lead in the first quarter.

“Sometimes you for some reason have a slow start and we would figure it out and we are confident in the boys,” he said.

Asked if the team was where they wanted to be according to their tournament plan he said they were.

“We worked all week in practice in practicing some things and we know what we want to do. So on to the championship game and hopefully on to another win.”

Temple said the team practiced four times in the week heading up to HOOPLA but it was nothing extreme as all of the other teams had likely practiced just as many times.

About Saturday’s provincial final he said the team was excited and ready to play.

The Central Cyclones face the Harvest City Reapers on Saturday March 28 at 3 pm at Peacock Collegiate.

The first quarter score was Central 17 and Humboldt 13.

The score at halftime was Central 43 and Humboldt 22.

The third quarter score was Central 64 and Humboldt 30.

The final score was Central 81 and Humboldt 45.
