Tax Arrears Drop

After taking a jump in 2025 the property tax arrears owing to the City of Moose Jaw dropped year over year from June 30, 2025 to June 30, 2026.

Total property tax arrears dropped $765,885 from $4,219,755 on June 30, 2025 to $3,453,870 on June 30, 2026. (See chart below).

Despite the drop in property tax arrears the amount is the second highest arrears over the last six years.

The sector with the highest outstanding taxes owing is residential single dwelling.

Single residential units owe $1,876,908.07 on June 30, 2025.

Single residential units took a major jump year over year in the amount of outstanding taxes owing on the books.

In the past the reason publicly given for the rise in single dwelling residential by the City has been the massive increase in the cost of living.

The category with the second amount of outstanding taxes on June 30, 2026 was commercial/industrial with $983,723.24 on the books.

Traditionally the property class with the highest outstanding property taxes has been commercial/residential but that changed a few years back.

Coincidentally a few years back the City moved to a tax sharing policy shifting some of the weight of commercial property taxes to residential property owners under a policy of tax fairness to equalize property tax rates based upon assessment.
