Deja Weeds......

By Robert Thomas

It might look like MJ Independent is running a story we ran just over two years ago but that is not the case as we stopped in at the site of a proposed distillery and distribution centre at 1021 and 1027 Ominica Street East - the former Dorlite Manufacturing facility but we are not.

We received a report from an area property owner about the weeds on the property and went out to take a look on Saturday afternoon. And yes the weeds are once again up to four feet in height in front of the building.

A person we spoke to - whose place of employment is in the area - said they had not seen any activity in the area “for a long time”.

The distillery project was announced in January 2019 and at the time was granted a three year property tax holiday once they were operational. The reason given for the 100 percent property tax holiday was it took three years - due to the need to age the product - before the distillery could start earning money.

In order to make scotch the facility would require extensive renovations something which the India based Imperial Distillery said they were prepared to do.

Shortly after the weed issue was reported by MJ Independent in 2020 the weeds at the front of the property were mowed down.

It needs to be noted other than a property with weeds growing on it it is NOT KNOWN what stage the $3 million project is at. It may well still come to fruition.

The last public mention of Imperial Distillers at Council was in a public disclosure they had given funds to a mayoralty candidate in the 2021 civic election.

It is known Imperial Distillers purchased the property.
