Prisoner Dies In Police Custody

The year ended with sad news for the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) as a prisoner in custody has died.

According to a release around 10 pm December 31st a prisoner went into medical distress and quit breathing.

Members of the MJPS immediately started CPR.

Both EMS and the Moose Jaw Fire Department attended the scene.

Despite efforts to revive the prisoner the individual was pronounced dead at the F W Wigmore Hospital.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

An independent investigation will be conducted by the Weyburn Police Service, Saskatchewan Coroners Service, and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team.

No further details will be released regarding the incident due to the on-going investigation.

This is the second in custody death in as many years involving the MJPS.

On October 7, 2021 a yet to be identified 40 year old male died in MJPS custody after unsuccessful attempts were made to revive the individual.

The incident was independently investigated by the Regina Police Service.

MJPS Chief Rick Bourassa has stated to the media that incident may be be part of a public inquiry.
