CBC To Establish Moose Jaw Bureau
The local media scene is about to get more crowded as CBC News has announced they will be setting up a bureau in Moose Jaw.
The new Moose Jaw bureau is part of the corporation’s plans to establish 11 new bureaus and hire 33 local journalists.
The new Moose Jaw bureau is a move to put the federal government supported news gathering body with a footprint in 77 locations. That is up by 11 from the present 66 locations.
The effort will see CBC News expand across the country in regions that have seen a decline in news coverage as media outlets have shut down.
The move has been touted as a historic investment in local journalism comes at critical moment, with local news in steep decline in Canada CBC said in a statement.
As part of their plans the CBC has stated they do not want to displace any media presently in the communities they are entering but to work with them.
“To be clear, we are committed to preserving and improving on the diversity of trusted news sources that local communities can rely on. As we set up these new bureaus, we will continue to champion the work of other community news organizations and seek opportunities to support and partner with them when we can. We believe a healthy media environment composed of private, community and publicly funded news organizations is essential for Canadian democracy and culture,” CBC Editor in Chief Brodie Fenton said in an online statement.
CBC News has not stated exactly how many reporters will be assigned to Moose Jaw.
