South Hill Community Association Kicks Off City-Wide Anti-Litter Campaign

Submitted by the South Hill Community Association

For over a decade, the South Hill Community Association (SHCA), a volunteer-led organization, has organized community cleanups throughout Moose Jaw’s parks, streets, and public spaces.

Volunteers say the litter problem across Moose Jaw is no longer improving. It’s getting worse, impacting the beauty of the city, local wildlife, parks, public spaces, and community pride.

The Association is now calling on the entire community to come together through a new city-wide initiative called “Just Can It,” aimed at addressing litter, improving community pride, and protecting Moose Jaw’s natural spaces.

During recent cleanup efforts in Wakamow Valley, volunteers witnessed hundreds of residents enjoying the park — walking, biking, paddling, and spending time outdoors.

“These spaces are clearly valued by our community,” said Crystal Froese, Chairperson of SHCA. “For more than 10 years, our volunteers have been cleaning parks, streets, and public spaces across Moose Jaw — not just once or twice a year, but year-round. Instead of improving, we are seeing more and more garbage dumped and blowing through our parks, trails, neighbourhoods, and streets every year. Volunteers are filling bag after bag of litter. This issue is getting worse, and it’s time for our community to come together and create real change.”

The campaign invites the City of Moose Jaw, local businesses, schools, volunteer organizations, community groups, and residents to work together to create a cleaner city before the issue grows even worse.

The Association is calling for:

• A year-round city-wide litter prevention campaign
• Improved landfill management to reduce garbage blowing into the community
• More garbage cans in parks and public spaces, along with regular and timely emptying
• Businesses to help sponsor garbage cans and positive anti-litter messaging throughout the city
• Fast food and takeout businesses to help spread the message by printing: “Just Can It” on containers and packaging
• Residents and park users to help keep public spaces clean year-round

Organizers say this cannot simply become a one-day or two-day cleanup effort, but instead must become a community mindset focused on pride, responsibility, and protecting Moose Jaw’s natural spaces for future generations.

The South Hill Community Association believes that through collaboration and community leadership, Moose Jaw can become one of the cleanest cities in Saskatchewan..
