Locally Overall Crime Index Down In 2025

Crime might be down year over year but if you think the level of or severity of violent crime in Moose Jaw has gone up you’d be right.

In crime severity indexes released on Wednesday it could be said Moose Jaw was a mixed bag statically, according to Statistics Canada, when it came to crime in 2025.

Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index or CSI and Violent Crime Severity Indexes (VCSI) are weighted indexes where certain crimes are given more weight in determining the overall level of crime in the community.

For example if you were to list a petty theft as a crime in a non-weighted crime rate report it would be given the same weight as a violent crime such as a murder. Both would simply be a single reported crime. In the CSI and VCSI crimes are given different weights depending on the severity of the crime. Giving a better picture of the severity of crimes in a community.

According to the overall Crime Severity Index crime fell from 105.17 in 2024 or a drop of 12.26 percent.

This is the fourth year in a row that the overall Crime Severity Index has fallen in the city. It is also the largest percentage drop in the last four years.

Despite the drop in crime the Violent Crime Severity Index is up.

After a small decrease in the Violent Crime Severity Index in 2024 the index jumped from 102.40 in 2024 to 109.16 in 2025 or 6.60 percent.

It is in the area of non-violent crimes the index percentage-wise took its biggest dip in the past four years.

The Non-Violent Crime Severity Index took a double digit drop percentage-wise the second year in a row.

The index fell from 107.17 in 2024 to 86.31 in 2025 or a 19.46 percent drop year over year.

Moose Jaw’s overall crime severity index trended downwards following the Canadian trend where crime severity is down nationally for the second year in a row.

Nationally the index dropped five percent in 2025 from 81.27 in 2024 and 75.01 in 2024.
