Flyers Shutout By Cyclones

Part One of a Series…..

“They aren't the same team they were last night,” an unidentified spectator said during the final intermission as the Milestone Flyers were shut out by Gull Lake's Southwest Cyclones on Friday evening.

The Cyclones managed a 2 - 0 shutout win against the Flyers despite being outshot 38 - 13 by the home squad.

Annika Kirk earned the shutout for the Cyclones.

“We had problems creating traffic in front of their goal,” Flyers head coach Shane Kaufmann said in a post game interview with MJ Independent.

Kaufmann and assistant coach Darrell Perras were philosophical about the Friday evening loss in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League Under 18 A action.

The Flyers saw some strong play including Emily Quigley who used her size on several occasions to safely clear the Cyclones offense away from in front of Flyers net minder Kammie Kaufmann.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at the 13:36 mark of the first period when Teagan Paul took a shot from the left wing which was stopped by Kaufmann but the resulting rebound was ne⁹tted by Emerson Sommer who was following up on the play.

The Flyers would have a strong first period but were unable to score despite beating Kirk and hitting the post twice.

The second period saw the Cyclones’ Abbie Arntsen score the insurance marker at the 11:58 mark on a high wrist shot through traffic assisted by Paul on the play.

Asked if playing the south division leader Prairie Storm Thunder the night before could have played a role in the Flyers loss Friday evening Kaufmann said it was possible but there could be other reasons.

He said the league was highly competitive with any team able to win at any given time.

On Thursday evening the Flyers had a two goal lead in the third period only to earn a tie against the Thunder.

The Flyers remain in second place in the southern division with a 5 - 2 - 3 record.

The Flyers next game is this Sunday at Radville as part of Hockey Day In Saskatchewan. The Flyers are participating because many of their players are from that community.

EDITOR'S NOTE- Come back later for Part Two as we update what the Flyers have been doing since we last attended a game.

You may not believe who had a five goal and one assist outing in Saskatoon.
