Toilers Put In Best Effort Of The Season

Toilers Return Reincarnated After The Christmas Break

When the Swift Current Colts strode onto the court for warmups it looked like the team was hungry.

League leading the undefeated Colts looked hungry and the menu for the night was the Peacock Toilers.

But what initially looked like an easy meal immediately turned into a fie ball as the Colts almost fell into the clutches of the Toilers beast.

In a see saw battle - where the Toilers led on multiple occasions during the game - the Swift Current Colts won 94 - 80.

“It was a long Christmas break. We needed to get our legs back right away,” said Raman Mall assistant coach of the Peacock Toilers.

“We’re really happy with the effort our boys put in. Swift played a good game as well. So good on them. I’m just happy with the effort the boys put in…we’re super happy with the effort the boys put out.”

Led by the combative play of Nate M the Toilers quickly showed their strength grabbing the early lead in the first minute.

It would turn into a combative and physical game where the Toilers would more than once strip the ball away and deny baskets just as the ball was set to go over the rim.

“Our boys did a really good job playing as a team. Communicating with each other. Communicating and talking as usual. Coming out of the Christmas break we’re really happy on how they played,” Mall said.

Although it was the strongest game, the Toilers had played this season Mall said the season was still early and peaking at the present wasn’t the Toilers main goal.

“We want to make sure we peak in March and not January or December,” he said.

The Toilers did practice during the January break and it helped the team to stay on track and not get rusty.

The team is planning on continuing their intensive practices as a means of bettering themselves.

“We are just going to keep working. Go back to the white board and talk to the boys about lots of things to focus on and get better at. There are opportunities to improve,” Mall said.

The Toilers team shone in the game whether it was when the starters or the bench was on the court. The entire team was playing at their best.

“We’ve got a good group of kids here. We have a lot of youth and talent we’re trying to develop here we’re developing we’re also putting them in games for experience and exposure.”

“We don’t just want to focus on winning games. We want to focus on developing players too,” Mall said.

Team development is a major focus for the Toilers this season as they rebuild the team after a large number graduates last season.

“We’ve been doing a lot of practice around everybody needs to know everything. Everybody needs to know how to play every position. Regardless if you’re a grade nine, grade ten or grade 11 or 12 we’re looking to get everybody involved in all position of the court.”

“We had some structure on the offensive and defensive side we wanted to get onto and we’re really happy for the effort the boys put in and again lots of opportunity to look back at and refine in our practices.”

The game saw some accurate shooting from both teams with field goals propelling the score.

The Toilers’ Caleb A had a standout performance wracking up 18 points or six baskets from field goal land.

Defensively the Toilers stopped shot after shot mid layup frustrating the Colts.
