Falcons Take Round Two
In their first meeting of the season it took the Peacock Toilers senior girls volleyball team five sets to defeat the Cornerstone Christian School Falcons.
On Wednesday evening it was a hard fought rematch between the Toilers and the Falcons with exact opposite results. The Falcons beat the Toilers 3 - 1 in sets to win the game and the battle for second place in the Moose Jaw city league.
Cornerstone won the first, second and fourth set with scores 25 - 20 25 - 16 and 25 - 21. Peacock won the hotly contested third set with a 25 - 23 score.
Lee Behrns head coach of the Falcons said the hard fought match was what they expected.
“We knew for us it was going to sort of be a showdown for second place. We knew the last game at Peacock (Collegiate) it was close it went five (sets), I think it was 15 - 12 in the fifth game so we knew tonight was going to be a lot of fun,” Behrns said.
He said the matches seemed to go Cornerstone’s way until the third set when the Toilers had an “epic comeback” and the Falcons had “no answer for the epic comeback.”
“They came back ten points. I credit them. They never give up.”
“In the last game they got up with great serving and we had to claw our way back with more consistent play. Nothing fancy just more consistent play,” he said.
Asked what he thought was the reason for the Falcons getting ahead Behrns attributed it to the team doing well in serving, consistent hits and putting the ball on their side of the court.
He called out the play of captain Hailey Doyle in the Falcon’s victory.
“Our captain Hailey Doyle was clicking passing wise. Usually she’s lights out hitting. Tonight she’s dug so many of Peacocks amazing hits it’s just really you could see the momentum shifted after a great hit that you tink is an ace or a kill and Hailey digs it up out of nowhere. That was the difference maker in extending rallies and us getting some points.”
He said this season has been great with a lot of good games and close wins. He pointed out that he expected the Toilers and Falcons to meet again in the future.
“It wasn’t our best out that’s for sure,” Haylee Bevan assistant coach for the Peacock Toilers said, adding “we came out flat and didn’t really play with much energy so I think next time we meet them we play a better game.”
Bevan said the Toilers were looking for a hotly contested showdown against the Falcons and for the final results to be a lot closer than things turned out.
“Cornerstone played good. They hustled. They saved a lot of balls so they played a good game.”
