Local Teams Dig In Desperate For Wins - Helping Hoops Day Two
It was a mixed bag for the two local teams in the Helping Hoops senior boys basketball tournament on Friday.
The Vanier Vikings had a golden opportunity slip out of their grasp and the Peacock Toilers beat back a late rush and grabbed victory.
Although the results were different the games were very similar in the intensity on and off the court. Both local teams drew a large number of fans to cheer the teams on.
Peacock - 69. Winston Knoll - 58
Intensity was the name of the game says Peacock Toilers player Trustin Koroseil.
“We brought a lot of intensity to tonight’s game. The bench was loud. We were loud on the court. That’s what we talked about before the game we were focusing on being positive and no negative energy. We wanted to be as loud as we could be,” he said.
The intensity got to Koroseil who went overboard and ended up fouling out of the game.
“I was playing as hard as I could because we lost our last game and everyone on the court was giving it their all. A lot of our starters have four fouls that’s just how hard we were playing today.”
He said there was a difference between Thursday’s loss and Friday’s win.
“We brought a lot more energy, intensity and we were just working better as a team overall.”
He said he wasn’t looking for big personal stats but just for the team to get the W.
“I just wanted to win. I really don’t care about my personal stats I just wanted to win.”
Koroseil said he couldn’t name any member of the Toilers who stood out as it was a complete team effort.
“Really everybody brought their best today. We all worked together as a team. There is no I in team,” he said.
Asked by MJ Independent about grade 12 student Nate Measner the response was he had a good game with a lot of rebounds.
“Nate got a big ball straight to the face. He got a lot of rebounds too so he definitely was a big part of our game today.”
Measner additionally was knocked to the court floor and then accidentally stomped on as part of a battle for the ball.
Koroseil said the tournament helped the team get prepared for March with the Moose Jaw city league playoffs kicking off and the run towards the provincial championships.

Vanier - 52 Greenall - 69
The Vanier Vikings senior boys basketball team seemed on course for victory as they played a very good first half against the Greenall Griffins.
The Vikings were running like a well oiled turbocharged machine leading the Griffins at the half.
But a defensive lapse left an unguarded buffer just shy of the three point line affording the Griffins unguarded field goal attempts.
The Griffins would score a bevy of three pointers on the way to overtaking the Vikings.
The Vikings would fight for offensive rebounds but a tough Greenall defence managed to out wrestle the Vikings for the ball.
After a successful comeback the Griffins would overtake the Vikings winning 69 - 52.
With the loss the Vanier Vikings will next play at 9 am Saturday.
