U 17 Mustangs Sweep Lacrosse Home Opener
They may not be the biggest U17 team in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League but the Moose Jaw U17 Mustangs teams did big things on Saturday.
The Mustangs opened their 2026 season with a pair of at home victories versus the Swift Current Rampage.
The Mustangs defeated the Rampage 13 - 5 in game one and in game two the Mustangs earned an 8 - 0 shutout.
Moose Jaw Mustangs head coach Shaun Seiferling said he was happy with the team’s play in their first two games of the year.
“I wasn’t too sure what we would get. I’ve dealt with quite a few of these kids for the last few years and we have one kid who’s brand new to the sport. For the first few games you’re not to sure what you’re going to get so but the kids came to play for sure today,” Seiferling said.
Moose Jaw physically is a smaller team but they managed to compete against Swift Current’s larger players.
“We emphasized at the start of the game we are smaller but we’re faster. So we have to utilize our speed to keep the game moving and move the ball. The more we move the ball, the quicker we pass the ball it doesn’t give them the opportunity to hit you all of the time,” he said.
It’s a strategy stolen from a Rocky movie the Mustangs are going to adopt this season. Greasy fast lightning speed.
Seiferling said it was a strategy the Mustangs achieved against Swift Current.
“I think so. I think it’s something we achieved today especially in the second game.”
Defensively the Mustangs improved in defence from game one to game two helping Mustangs’ goaltender Brandt Barber earn the 8 - 0 shutout victory.
The team was enthusiastic about starting the season.
“They were pretty excited to get going. You know we’ve been practicing for a couple or three weeks already so when we got the games going here they were really excited for that,” he said.
Playing a double header against Swift Current caused some fatigue but it’s something the team has been working on.
“We’ve been practicing for a couple of weeks now. You look at Swift Current they are a smaller bench and they were slowing down at the start of this game,” he said, adding “I’ve been running the kids pretty good a practices to get their endurances going.”
The Mustangs are running a short bench this season.
They have 11 runners and a goalie.
A full roster is 18 runners and two goalies.
Endurance because of a short bench could be factor this season.
Despite the season already having started registration will be open throughout the season and late joiners are welcome to come out and join the team.
