Broncs Beat Vikings

The home opener showdown for the Vanier Vikings against the Indian Brincs may have taken place on a cool and damp day but it was anything from sluggish.

The game had an explosive start as the Broncs ran back the initial kick off for a touchdown.

The explosion continued as Vikings quarterback Nixon Adrian hit his brother wide receiver Coen Adrian with a 58 yard pass and running play for a touchdown.

All within the first minute of play.

Then Vanier grabbed the lead on a two point conversion going up 8 - 6.

But then the Broncs struck back going on to defeat the Vikings 49 - 22 in Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association 9-a-side action.

The Adrian brothers would combine for another strike at 8:27 of the third quarter only to have the Broncs to return a kickoff at 8:09 for a touchdown.

Vanier quarterback Nixon Adrian would call his own number at 2:50 of the fourth quarter for the Vikings third touchdown of the game.

Broncs quarterback and grade eleven student Ini Somefun played as a veteran in the position when the truth was this was this only the third game he had quarterbacked in his life.

“Oh it’s all good. We had lots of young guys in new positions. There are a lot of good things going on but there is always room for improvements,” Vanier Vikings head coach Luke Tkatchuk said.

Going down the first play of the game may have seemed a bad omen for the game but he said the Vikings collectively shrugged it off and responded quickly.

Asked about the play of the Adrian brothers at quarterback and wide receiver he said it was good “but there is always room to approve.”

During the previous scrimmage against Yorkton Tkatchuk said the opportunity was a good one given their quarterback was new to the position.

He didn’t call out any single play as exceptional for the Vikings but stated there were plenty of good plays by the Vikings but they needed to be reviewed by watching the game film.

“Once we do that we can get ready for next week.”

For Indian Head Broncs head coach Tim Klein the game saw the victory as bouncing back from last weekend’s 48 - 0 drubbing by the Lumsden Devils.

“I’m totally proud. We had a tough one against Lumsden last week and…you can look at it the seasons over or you can say it’s like life. Here is where we need to improve and go from there.”

Then rapid action moving of the score and momentum in the game’s initial minute of play was something the Broncs could have allowed to drag them down or they could treat it like the Lumsden loss and just continue to work past Klein said.

“Are you going to dig deep or are you going to quit? And our kids dug deep and that’s the best effort we’ve had in two years.”

“Once we settled down on the defensive side and once we settled down on the offensive side, our quarterback is brand new, he’s only been quarterback for three weeks…so we really worked in the pocket with him…he slowed the game down on the sideline and when they are doing this we do that,” Klein said.

Another big thing was when the Vikings keyed in on one player the Broncs were able to move the play to a different player, he said.

Klein was philosophical about coaching.

“I think that when you coach you want to make better human beings number one but when you see growth in them on the sidelines, when you see growth in them on the practice field. When you see growth in them on the game field that’s what makes me the proudest,” he said.

“I’m just happy to go home with the win. Then we have an exhibition game (versus Meadow Lake). Then we have Ft Qu’Appelle.”
