Vanier Senior Boys Defeat Peacock

It was a night of elastic as no matter how much the Vikings stretched them the Peacock Toilers senior boys seemed to bounce back.

The Toilers would be down with the Vikings seemingly in the driver’s seat only to see Peacock spring back.

It made for an exciting night of volleyball in Moose Jaw city league action.

The Vikings would win the game 3 - 1 in sets.

The set scores were Vikings 25 - Toilers 19, Vikings 25 - Toilers 20, Vikings 20 - Toilers 25 and Vikings 25 - Toilers 23.

Vanier Vikings head coach Levi Broda said it was a really good effort for the young team.

“We’re young and we’re learning to play together as a team. Today we put all of the pieces together fairly well,” Broda said.

“They’re a really tough team and we have to learn from our mistakes because they’re an offensive powerhouse.”

He said the Vikings stood up to the pressure.

“It was awesome to see our boys stand tough on defence and they were mentally tough because they knew they were going to fight back really hard,” he said, adding “We were expecting it to be a five set brawl and we were ready for as many sets as it took.”

Broda said there is optimism in this year’s Vikings he wouldn’t typify as a rebuild year after the graduation loss of nine grade 12 players.

The Vikings are a young team with only three grade twelves on a 12 player roster. The roster rounds out with eight grade eleven students and one student in grade ten.

He typified it as a normal year despite the departure of so many seniors. He said the quality and experience of the players who showed for calling it a normal year for the Vikings.

The Vikings have simple goals their hoping to lead to the team’s success.

“Just the kids developing that team chemistry. We are developing that scrappiness and taking care of our side. It’s a work in progress.”
