No Plan B If Application Rejected For Proposed New Landfill Site

CITY HAS NO PLAN B IF DISCRETIONARY USE APPLICATION DENIED

With the City waiting for the RM of Moose Jaw to decide whether or not to allow the development of a new landfill north of the intersection of 9th Avenue NW and the Trans-Canada Highway the question is does the City have a Plan B?

What happens if the RM says no? Does the City have alternative sites?

The answer to the question is NO.

Asked by MJ Independent, at the post Council media scrum, if the City does in fact have an alternative site(s) city manager Maryse Carmichael said no.

“This is something that we need to look at and that a discussion we’re having with the RM. We will have to go back to the drawing board and figure out a different location,” Carmichael said.

“We are looking at all of the options. Looking at the old landfill we did between the fresh water source, between what’s already existing it’s really not an option we’re considering,” she said.

The proposed location of the new landfill has drawn widespread opposition from RM residents opposed to it.

Residents have concerns regarding smell, lower property values, stray garbage leaving the site, closeness to Highway #2 and other concerns.

At a recent open house consultation for RM residents found an overwhelming majority of RM residents opposed to the proposed site.

The present landfill has an estimated 4 - 5 years life remaining until it is full.
