Toilers Take Advantage Of Vikings’ Lapses
The Peacock Toilers senior boys basketball team have never been so intense as they were Tuesday evening.
It was a bench that wouldn’t sit down as they motivated their playing brethren as loud as an elephant on a charge.
Unfortunately for the Vanier Vikings they were right in the path of the Peacock elephant with no mice to release.
At the end of the night the Toilers defeated the Vikings 94 - 53.
“It was a horrible game,” Vanier Vikings head coach David Tardif said,
“They wanted the game more than us. They outworked us in every aspect.”
The Vikings had a strong first quarter. The second quarter the Vikings hung in there but by the third quarter the Bikings had no response, he said.
Hard work is the solution.
“The solution is we’ve gift to work hard. We’ve got to want it. We’re a little bit behind and practises and we did not have a strong practice over break and it’s showing,” Tardif said.
The problems at the Vanier Gymnasium should not affect the level of practice.
“We still have five backboards.”
The Vanier Gym at this time was has not been able to host any games over the last few weeks because a staff member attempted to tighten up the backboard and it shattered and they are still waiting for a replacement backboard.
It’s all about following what’s being taught at practice,
“Right now, they have to be attentive and taking all the instructions we give them at practice. All the stuff we’ve been telling them they need to be prepared for…it’s just matter of them following what we teach them,” he said.
Tardif said he noticed the larger Vanier fan base but wished the team hadn’t fallen short.
“It’s kind of nice. I just wish we had done something better to pay them for coming out to watch is.”
Conversely to Tardif’s impression in Vikings land Peacock Toilers head coach Troy Setter said he was happy with the team’s play.
“Yeah, the boys put together a full game tonight. They worked together on both ends of the court so that was nice to see,” Setter said.
“This was the most intensity brought to a game. It was good to see.that they’re slowly starting to buy into what we’re trying to get them to do so that’s good,” he said.
Practice wise he said the team is moving right along. Despite a pair of losses on the weekend, the team’s development continues to advance
Ask where he’d like to see the team being in a week time and development Setter replied “ We just want to see them moving up. We don’t want to be seeing steps backward.”
Setter said there is no difference in coaching any game.
“To me there’s no coaching easy games. If you’re up 40, we are down 40 or a single you have to stay engaged. It’s just hard to keep them engaged whether you’re up or you’re down.”
Asked to stood out in the game he declined to name and it’s individual player or players, but rather just said the entire team stood out.
“The whole team how they talked on defense. I’m not going to single anyone out.”
Asked about the large fan base who came out he respectfully said he never saw them because he was focussed on the game.
