Sask Polytechnic Lays Off 30
It may be unknown the number, if any, of staff who were cut from their Moose Jaw Campus but Sask Polytechnic is cutting 30 staff system wide for their upcoming year.
That’s the outcome of the organization’s annual operational review. The review is to ensure programs align with labour market demand, operational efficiency and budget priorities.
The layoff notices were issued to 30 full-time and part-time staff in April.
The cuts include 18 faculty, nine professional services employees and three out of scope employees.
Sask Polytechnic blames the drop in enrollment due to federal government policies regarding foreign students.
The federal government has reduced immigration numbers in an attempt to address a lack of housing, medical care, and other social services available due to the large influx of immigrants including foreign student enrolment. Many foreign students were not using their education status to take home expertise but rather as a means to gain immigration status in the country.
“This is a challenging time for Sask Polytech and these decisions are not made lightly. Throughout this period, our focus is on our students and on our mission, to inspire success in every learning journey,” the institution said in a statement.
Sask Polytechnic policy disallows the institution releasing what programs and what institutions employee cuts take place at.
