Editorial - Changing the Canadian Football League so it is more like American Football?

By Richard Dowson

CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston announced new rules, field changes starting with the 2026 season.

It will make the Canadian game more like American football.

Has Stewart been outside Canada all year?

He missed the rise of ‘Canadianism’ since Donald Trump returned as president of the United States. He missed the part about Canadians wanting to be more Canadian and flying Canadian flags.

We love our American cousins and the Americans who play our Canadian game. But we want to keep it a Canadian game. Leave it alone.

I will never condone the dumping of manure on Stewart’s front lawn like was done to Paul McCallum in November 2004 when he missed an 18-yard field goal.

In that “Manure Gate” incident Moose Jaw’s own MLA Glenn Hagel rose in the Saskatchewan Legislature and begged for calm.

So, I’m calm, Glenn. No manure on Stewart’s front lawn – but Stewart’s rules and field changes need to be buried in a pile offresh Canadian manure.

It’s an old Canadian game. We didn’t even change it to Metric! Please, leave it alone.
