Mavericks Squeeze By Rebels

A goal is a goal no matter how it ends up in the goal is the best way to sum up Sunday’s 3 - 2 victory by the Moose Jaw Carpet One U15 A Mavericks over the visiting Regina Rebels Gold.

The Rebels had battled back from a 2 - 0 deficit to tie the game at 2 - 2 with plenty of tine and momentum to record the win.

But a late penalty for hooking and a Mavericks shot that looped overhead into the net scored the 3 - 2 victory in favour of the hometown Mavericks.

Mavericks head coach Tori Seiferling it was a two sided coin for the team - it all depended on how you looked at it.

On Saturday afternoon the Mavericks lost 4 - 3 to the division leading Swift Current Colt Blacks.

“Yesterday yeah we came out with a loss but we actually had a good push in the third (period). Today the same thing. We had a really strong first period. An OK second period but we kind of came out flat in the third (period),” Seiferling said, adding “but we found a way to get it done which is amazing.”

About the looper shot that resulted in the winning goal she said it was “amazing.”

“I’ve said to the girls that is to show any puck on net can work. That is the importance of getting the puck to the net because you never know what’s going to happen,” she said.

About the team being in second place in the division it’s something the Mavericks are happy with this time in the season.

“This league is actually pretty tight. Every game could go either way…of course we want to be at the top but we’ll work our way to get there.”

The U15 A Mavericks has a large core of the players from the U13 A 2022 - 2023 provincial championship team.

“We have a few that are new but it’s a real similar team. We’d like to do that again (win the provincial championship) and their skills are getting better,” she said.

The team has been having a good year with a highlight being going to Calgary and winning the Wickfest tournament.

They’re off to a tournament this weekend in Warman that the team is hopeful to win again.
