Spirits Boxed Out By Rockets
Aggressive play, fighting for the ball and boxing out effectively lead the Assiniboia Rockets JV girls to a 66 -32 victory the Vanier Spirits junior girls basketball team on Monday evening.
For the Rockets it was a game plan that saw the visitors fighting for ball control off the back boards, in the air, on the court and even on floor.
“It was not too bad. We actually played a lot better in the second half. But we’re working hard we’re a pretty inexperienced team compared to some of these teams in the league,” Spirits head coach Ryan Gottselig said.
“We need more practice time. (We need) to get moving on offence a little bit better.”
The Spirits team is split with six grade 9 and six grade 10 student players.
About the Rockets he said they are a strong team and do a lot of things well.
“They’ve got a good team. They move the ball well as a team and they put a lot of pressure on D (defence).”
Being this is the first time they’ve played the Rockets this season Gottselig said he didn’t known exactly what to expect. Until Friday.
“ I knew they were an older team so generally, they are more aggressive…they play a good aggressive game and traps in zone.”
He was impressed with the Rockets defensive system.
“They play hard like I said defence wise they are tough with traps going everywhere. They cause turnovers. Yeah they’re a very good team,” Gottselig said.
The goal for this season is for the team to improve and get better.
“We’re going to try to just get better and compete in every game.”
During the break, that runs until January, the team is going to try to to understand where to be offensively on the court. Create better movement and get better shots.
“There are a lot of earring backgrounds when it comes to experience at basketball what they’ve done in the past. It’s going to take a little bit of time for the girls to get up to speed but we’ll get there,” he said.
Gottselig said he’s proud of the girls who are working hard and competing and all the games they’re in.
