BCA Cougars Top Vikings

The Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars JV boys basketball team used fast breaks and size to down the Vanier Vikings JV boys 96 - 48 on Monday night.

The Cougars repeatedly passed the ball in a looping pass over the Vikings defensive line to have the ball picked up on the bounce and a basket scored by a layup.

Asked about the size difference Vikings head coach Richard Adams said the team was largely made up of grade 10 students and thus not as big as Briercrest.

“We are young team. We are smaller we play a better second half than the first half. We have to learn a little bit more aggression. Aggression on defence wil lead into transition and then our offence will open up,” Adams said.

When asked about the Cougars looping pass strategy he agreed that the second quarter was a big one when it came to Briercrest putting pressure on them.

“We are a small team, but our little guys give it their all 100 percent. I’m so happy with these guys because they do give it 100 percent all of the time.”

Asked about the good point in the Vikings’ game it was their shooting.

“When they shoot a three point shot they can hit it. I’m happy with how they run the floor and the way they communicate with each other. It’s just nice to see,” he said.

There is however, areas that have worked on in the Vikings’ game.

“We have to work on boxing out Boxing out is key to this league. We don’t do that yet, but we’ve got to work on it.”

Despite the problems, he describes the Vikings as a team that won’t quit.

“We could be down by 130 or 140 points, but I’ve coached my kids to never quit until that end buzzer,” Adams said.

He said he personally wasn’t ecclusivwmy looking for wins.

“My goal is progression. If I can see that tiniest progression in my kids then I’m happy.”

Despite the hardships, and despite the losses, Adam sees his team as succeeding. Especially that they’re having a fun time playing basketball

“I’m having a blast. My kids are having a blast. We’re having a good time. They all show up for games. They all show up for practices. We’re a good tight unit.”
