Toilers assistant coach Vaughn Hutchinson said despite the Toilers losing their first set of the season he’s still happy with the results.
“I think we came out a little bit flat in the first game. We really didn’t get to play our game. You know we want to hit but we weren’t able to do that in the first game.”
The second game against Vanier was a better effort.
“I think we turned it around in the second game though and really played our game very aggressively.”
About losing their first ever set of the season and almost a second set against Vanier Hutchinson said “we just came out a little too flat. I think we get the lead early and we play with high energy and we just weren’t able to do that in that first game.”
The season has been a great one for the Toilers. Up until Wednesday evening they hadn’t lost a single set.
“We’ve had a great season so far. We’ve won our home tournament and we’ve had three semi-final finishes in our other tournaments. We are really really proud of the team. In league nights we’ve been really really good other than that defeat today,” Hutchinson said.
Central Cyclones head coach Brooke Roy said she was happy with how her charges played.
“It was a great game. It was the first time we’ve beaten Peacock Orange this season. It’s their first loss of the season,. So it was pretty exciting,” Roy said.
The Vanier match was a tough one.
“We played a different lineup. We didn’t use our starting line. We used a combination of our starters and not starters. So it was a different lineup. We always get caught with tips against Vanier. They were swinging at us tonight which was new to us but they played a great game,” Roy said.
A major highlight was the Cyclones climbing up from an 11 point deficit in the second set to lose 25 - 23.
The Cyclones season has been positive.
“It’s been great. Lots of development like the team from the first week to now has grown so much. It’s been amazing. There’s been lots of great leadership.”
The Cyclones finish off their final tournament this weekend in Swift Current.
Spirits assistant coach Abby Hildebrand said she was happy with the team’s performance on the evening.
“I’m super super impressed with our girls. We came off of a week of some hard work at practice and it showed. They had a great attitude. They were hitting the floor. They were talking to each other. They were doing all of the good things. Lots of grit,” Hildebrand said.
Despite losing the second against Peacock 26 - 24 she was impressed with the team managing to come back from an 11 point deficit to almost win the set.
“You could tell by the energy the girls brought it was a great game to watch.”
She typified the season as being a good one for the Spirits.
“This is a great group of girls so I think lots of relationships and team building has happened over the past month. So it’s really really cool to see all of that coming together and being shown on the court,” she said.
