U17 Mustangs Continue To Roll

The Moose Jaw U17 Mustangs lacrosse club are a perfect 5 - 0 to start the season but it’s a streak the larger Weyburn Panther Drilling Thrashers challenged on Monday evening.

It a challenge the Mustangs thwarted going on to defeat the Thrashers 9 - 6 in a game Weyburn at times threatened to steal.

“It was a little closer tonight. They almost doubled us for (the number of) runners. There’s not much I can do I have a ten man roster so I’m kind of limited,” Mustangs head coach Shaun Seiferling said.

The Mustangs’ official game plan was not to turn the match into an Olympic sprint because of a short bench but it’s a plan the players didn’t follow.

“Well I told the kids to not make it into a track meet. I didn’t want them running full steam back and forth on the floor for a full 60 minutes they obviously went against what I was saying,” Seiferling said.

The Mustangs were aggressive in checking the Thrashers stripping the ball from Weyburn at key moments.

A shot from behind the Thrashers’ goal hitting the goalie in the back and scoring a goal lifted the Mustangs.

In front of the Thrashers goal the Mustangs, despite being outsized by their opponents, fought hard for the ball.

“Obviously they proved me wrong and they can run the full 60 minutes,” he said.

The size factor was something on the back of Seiferling’s mind against a much larger Weyburn team. It’s a matter of compensating with Moose Jaw’s strengths.

“We’re probably the smallest team in the league so we need to remember that. That we need to be smart with ball. Throw the ball. Use our speed. We are fast so we need to use our speed.”

“It’s good,” he said about being undefeated, adding “it’s always good to be going with zero losses. So we have just got to keep plugging because as you move forward it keeps getting harder and harder.”

Complacency has already popped up in the Mustangs as they squeaked by for a victory in the fourth game of the season.

“I think we came in thinking we had just beaten them pretty handily and we almost got caught,” Seiferling said.

The Mustangs will need to continue to clamp down for their next game.

“Hopefully we don’t come out with that same mindset. We’ve got to move the ball, move our feet and work as a team.”
