A remarkable display of technical skill and determination earned Pax Nelson a silver medal at the Canadian National Judo Championships in Calgary this past weekend.

Competing in the Senior Men’s - 66 kg division in ne-waza competition, Nelson fough through a national field and captured silver after an impressive run that saw him finish every one of his opponents with a triangle choke.

The Triangle choke, also called sankaku-jime in Judo, is a submission technique where a competitor uses their legs to trap an opponent’s head and arm in a figure-four position. Once locked in, the hold applies pressure to the sides of the neck, restricting blood flow and forcing an opponent to submit or fall unconscious.

The result marks a major achievement for the Control Jiu-Jitsu club, where Pax has been a member for eight years and has learned the triangle choke from the fantastic instructors Jason, Nate, and Donald. This result highlights the growing strength of Control Judo/Jiu-Jitsu at the national level.

“This was an outstanding performance,” his Father and Judo Instructor Jeff Nelson said following the event. “To submit opponents at a national championship level and to do it repeatedly with the same technique speaks to the level of preparation and confidence he brought into the tournament.”

This is Nelson’s second medal at the Canadian National Championships, and this performance now adds to Nelson’s growing competitive résumé and sets the stage for future success at higher levels of competition.
