Junior Mavericks Dominate Razorbacks To Go To 3 - 2

For the first ten minutes it looked like Moose Jaw was going to have a hard row against Weyburn.

Moose Jaw took the lead but Weyburn responded ending the first period 5 - 3 in the Mustangs favour.

But then the Mustangs exploded with nine unanswered goals in the second period going on to defeat the visiting Razorbacks 19 - 5.

The win gives Moose Jaw a 3 - 2 record while Weyburn moves to 0 - 5 in Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) junior division play. Moose is in third place.

“It was close first period thy came ready to battle. We maybe didn’t have our best period and then we turned it up in the second (period). We were able to push the pace and play more of our game,” Dustin MacAngus Mustangs head coach said.

Asked what he had told his troops between the first and second periods he said “just to get going.”

The words of wisdom would lead to the Mustangs dominating the second period and scoring nine unanswered goals. The Mustangs efforts knocked what little wind there was out of the Razorbacks’ sails.

“Our D really stepped up in the second period and put some pressure on them. It took the time and space away.”

Asked if he was surprised to put up so many goals against Weyburn he said “you’re always surprised to put up 19 goals in a lacrosse game. We have got some guys who can find the back of the net.”

At the most recent weekly standings two Mustang players were in the top ten point scorers in the league.

Ryder Gilroy had 14 goals and 6 assists in four games.

Cooper Bruce had 8 goals and 10 assists in four games.

Bruce would score five Mustangs goals and add five assists on Friday evening.

“We’re content at where our record is” he said about the Mustangs being in third place with a 3 - 2 record.

“We want to keep pushing off if this to put ourselves in a place to make the playoffs.”

MacAngus said next weekend’s game in Prince Albert against the Predators should be a good game given Prince Albert has won the league championship the last three years in a row.

The Mustangs next game is Saturday May 23rd at 7 pm against the Prince Albert Predators.

The Mustangs next home game is Friday June 5th at 8 pm against the league leading Winnipeg Blizzard.
