Mafia Snowed In By June Blizzard
A big start in the first period was unfortunately followed by running into a brick wall in the second period as the Moose Jaw Mafia dropped a 22 - 3 decision to the Winnipeg Blizzard.
Straight off their Friday night matchup against the Saskatoon Rush fueled Fighting Sioux the Mafia team exhibited some fatigue.
To put it into perspective Winnipeg was fresh off a massive 24 - 7 victory over top of the fourth place Regina Heat.
Despite fatigue Mafia ran a hard game managing some great scoring opportunities.
“It was a good game. A great start in the first honestly. We slowed down. We played last night. We’re short bodies honestly. I’ve got no complaints it was a good effort from the group tonight,” assistant captain Bailey Bechtold said.
“Nobody is hanging their heads. We’re all smiling.”
Asked for his feelings about the lightning start and temporarily holding the lead on a Matt Saunders goal Bechtold said he was happy.
“I was super happy on how they came out. But like I said we played last night and just burnt out super quick. We’ve got to work on the cardio on the off season,” he said.
Being their first season in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League’s Senior Division he said he was happy with the team.
“We have great turnouts for practices there are no complaints there. We have a good group of guys. We have guys flying in from Florida to play. Driving from Winnipeg to play. So it’s big. It’s nice to have that in Moose Jaw.”
The one thing the team is not treating the team is and that’s a beer league. The Mafia squad is taking their being in the league as nothing more than serious, he said.
“It’s definitely not the case of just going out. We want to take this serious,” Bechtold said.
The Mafia’s next game is at home at the Kinsmen Sportsplex Sunday June 14th at 12 noon versus the Winnipeg Blizzard.
