U13 Mustangs End Regular Season With Big Win
The Moose Jaw U13 Mustangs ended their regular season with a 7 - 1 victory over the visiting Regina Chaos Blue in South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League action on Tuesday evening.
The tenth and last game of the regular season saw the Mustangs jump out hard and never look back.
The win gives the Mustangs an 8 - 1 - 1 season record and first place after an unexpected tie against the fourth placed (1 - 8 - 1) Weyburn Thrashers on Sunday.
The Mustangs jumped out into what turned into a 4 - 0 lead after the second period.
The third period saw the Mustangs make the score 5 - 0 until 13:03 when Regina scored.
With the score 5 - 1 Moose Jaw would add two goals making the final score 7 - 1.
The night’s big highlight for the Mustangs was Brody Soper scoring the final goal in a hat trick with six seconds left in the game.
Soper finished up the regular season with 11 goals.
“I found it to be a really good game. The kids played really good against tough competition…our kids played so good were really proud of them,” Mustangs assistant coach TJ Bellefeuille said.
Bellefeuille said she was happy with how the team played considering throwing away what looked to be a sure victory in their last game against Weyburn.
“In Weyburn we had a big lead and it got a little bit away on us and we ended up tying. So we had to go a 100 percent all the way through to make sure (it didn’t happen again). They showed up and they did that,” she said.
She said it wasn’t just losing but rather when the team “got a little bit tired and sort of gave up” was a concern.
“They were dialed in. Our goalie was dialed in. Our players were dialed in. They wanted this so bad so I wasn’t worried and it was awesome to watch.”
Asked what was the Mustangs strongest point was Bellefeuille said it was their defensive play.
“Out defence was really, really good. Pressuring the ball was really, really good.”
The weak point for the Mustangs was failing to make passes at times during the game.
“We could have passed the ball a couple of times but overall I think they had a really strong good game,” she said.
About the now fast approaching playoffs Bellefeuille said she was looking forward to having a bit more lacrosse.
She said the team has pulled up and improved all season so the playoffs should be good.
