U15 Mustangs Wrap Up Regular Season With Disappointing Loss
Injuries and penalties hit the Moose Jaw U15 Mustangs hard on Monday evening as they lost 8 - 2 to the visiting Regina Chaos Green.
Chaos Green opened the scoring on a 20 foot top left corner shot by Declan Brown at 10:07 of the first period. It was one of four goals he would score on the evening.
Trailing 4 - 1 in the second period the Mustangs seemed to pick up a lot of momentum when Tanner Hart scored their second goal at 6:45.
Pressing Chaos Green the Mustangs the Mustangs unfortunately took a pair of penalties resulting in goals for Regina that seemingly took the wind out it the Mustangs’ sails.
The Mustangs never really recovered as Chaos Green exploited Moose Jaw’s more desperate play to score two goals in the third period.
The loss gives the U15 Mustangs a 2 - 8 record and sixth place in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League U15 division.
“I think the players battled hard. We had a short bench. We had a couple of injuries that couldn’t get going today. We had a guy that got kicked out. We battled throughout and we got a good effort. We had a lot of good plays and a lot of opportunities,” Mustangs Assistant Coach Shane Smith said.
The shortened bench left the Mustangs trying to keep up with Chaos Green at times.
Despite the loss the Mustangs gave improved throughout the season especially defensively.
“We’ve been working on the defence side of the ball. We’re making sure we are on the right side of the ball between it and the net kind of thing,” Smith said.l, adding “we’re really focused on that. We want to make sure we are taking care of our end before we look at the offensive side of the game.”
Despite the hard work he admitted the Mustangs’ play was sluggish at times.
“At times we struggled to find a loose ball. It was a big part of the game where Regina found the wherewithal to find those loose balls. Who has those balls (in their possession) the more times is going to score more goals. So that is kind of the way it went for us tonight.”
Although the play was sluggish at times it wasn’t evident for the Mustangs as they were soaked from the effort at the end of the game.
The expulsion because of a kick may have hurt the Mustangs but it was also the right call by the referee Smith said.
The Mustangs found themselves in a deep hole but continued to battle back a very aggressive Chaos Green defence.
Chaos Green played a tight hacking defence to hem in the Mustangs.
The team now has a few days off and will prepare themselves for the playoffs coming up.
