Peacock Senior Girls Defeat Cougars

After last week’s disappointing 3 - 2 sets loss to the Vanier Spirits the Peacock Toilers senior girls volleyball team are on a roll.

On Tuesday evening the Toilers were in a tight competition that they managed to blaze through.

Sporting special pink uniforms to highlight the fight against cancer the Toilers put in a well rounded performance to defeat the Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars in three straight sets.

The set scores were 25 - 19, 25 - 17 and 25 - 20 in the Toilers favour.

Peacock Toiler multi-position player and Grade 12 student Annyssa Davis said the Toilers played a good game against a strong opponent.

“I think Briercrest is a good opponent. We had good chemistry. We worked together as a team and I think that kind of showed our win tonight,” Davis said.

She is part of a Toilers team with six out of 12 players in grade 12. It’s the foundation of a potential powerhouse.

For Davis her final year with the team is an incentive to push it to the limit.

“This year l want to leave my print. I want to leave my mark. Play a little harder than I did last year,” she said.

“I’d say we have a really strong team this year.”

She said the team needs to work on communication and if they can perfect it the team should make it to provincials.

“I can see us going top five.”

Brieecrest Cougars head coach Rachel Stead said despite the loss the game was well worth it.

“It was a good challenge for our girls. I think we grew a lot in this game and we have a few things coming out of this game,” she said.

Asked what the team was going to work on Stead said it was on returning serves.

“Peacock had some tough servers so we are going to work on that.”

She said the Cougars have so far had a good season.

“Pretty good. We’ve had a lot of volume with our games and tournaments so far early in the season.”

Stead said they are looking forward to knowing the girls better and coming together as a team.

The Cougars are looking forward to the remainder of the season.
